How to Modify Mesh Files in Autodesk Fusion (Without Losing Your Mind)

ree

In one of my recent zoom Fusion classes, a student asked how to modify a 3D model of a reusable spool holder to fit 3kg filament spools. The challenge? The only available file was an STL — and editing mesh files in Fusion can be a pain.

At first glance, there was hope: the download page included a .f3d file. But after importing it into Fusion, we discovered it wasn’t a true native file — just a mesh converted to a solid body. That meant working with triangles and limited editability.

Instead, I downloaded the original STL, brought it into the Mesh Workspace, and showed how to cut, scale, and recombine mesh bodies to make clean, dimensional changes. Using plane cuts and non-uniform scaling, I extended just the center section without altering the design features. After aligning and combining the parts, I exported it back to the slicer—ready to print.

💡 This workflow is powerful for quick edits to mesh models.
